Founder, Studio J McDonald at Love House

Brooklyn-based artist and designer who studied architecture at Middlebury College and completed an artist residency at Taliesin West in 2014. Working through Studio J McDonald and the fabrication venture Shape Studio, he creates sculptural furniture and objects in metal and plaster that draw on organic forms found in nature and vernacular architecture. McDonald launched his furniture practice in 2019 and has also held residencies at Franconia Sculpture Park and the McColl Center for Visual Arts. A year spent in West Africa, including a house project in Abetenim, Ghana, and study of an inhabitable termite mound in Bamako, Mali, shaped his interest in organic, earth-based forms, and he develops his own lime-based natural plaster formulations. He is represented in New York by Love House.
