Terms of Use

Effective Date: July 23, 2026

1. Acceptance of These Terms

These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your access to and use of design.nyc (the "Site"), a public directory of New York City's design community operated by SENTIENT Furniture Inc. ("SENTIENT," "we," "us," or "our") — a Brooklyn-based design studio and gallery rooted in craft and contemporary design, and the parent company behind sentientfurniture.com. The Site is presently reachable at www.sentient.casa and www.design.nyc, both of which resolve to the same service. By browsing, searching, or otherwise using the Site, or by creating an account, applying for a profile, or requesting ownership of a profile, you agree to be bound by these Terms and by our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated by reference. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.

2. What design.nyc Is

design.nyc is a curated, editorial reference of the people and companies shaping New York's interiors, objects, materials, and built environment — interior designers, architects, landscape and lighting designers, furniture and object designers, textile and surface designers, and the firms, studios, workshops, and fabricators they practice at. It is founded and supported by SENTIENT and is the sibling project of SENTIENT's Artist Directory. The Site presently includes approximately 2,900 individual profiles and 730 company profiles, a filterable interactive map of studios and offices, and a calendar of third-party New York design-community events. We may add, remove, reorganize, or change any part of the Site's content, features, or availability at any time, without notice.

3. How Profiles Are Compiled

Most profiles on design.nyc were not submitted by the people or companies they describe. We compile them ourselves from publicly available sources — practice and studio websites, press coverage, professional directories and association rosters (such as the AIA New York Firm Directory), award programs, and public professional-network pages such as LinkedIn company pages — for the purpose of building an accurate, useful reference of New York's design industry. We do this without first obtaining the subject's consent, in the same way a review, ranking, or reference publication might describe a public professional or business from public information. Every compiled profile records the sources it was built from, and we make a good-faith effort to keep facts accurate and current. Because much of the underlying information comes from third parties, we cannot guarantee that every detail — founding years, exact employment dates, team sizes, and similar facts — is precise; where a profile presents such details as approximate or free-form, they should be read as such. If a profile compiled about you or your company contains an error, or you would rather it not appear at all, Section 4 explains how to fix or remove it.

4. Claiming, Correcting, or Removing a Profile

If you are the subject of a compiled profile, you can request ownership of it ("claim" it) using the private claim link associated with that profile, or by searching for it from the Apply page and requesting ownership instead of creating a duplicate. Claiming a profile requires verifying your email address; a link we send to that address signs you in and creates a pending ownership request, which a design.nyc administrator reviews before granting you control of the profile. We review every claim to guard against impersonation. Once approved, you can edit your profile's public details, images, location settings, links, project history, recognitions, education, and firm affiliations at any time from your account.

If you would rather not claim a profile — for example, because you want a single correction made without taking on account management, or because you want the profile taken down entirely — contact us using the details in Section 19 and we will correct or remove it. We may also independently suspend, hide, or correct a profile if we find it inaccurate, if it describes someone who does not appear to be a genuine New York design professional, or for any other reason described in these Terms.

5. Accounts and Sign-In

design.nyc uses passwordless authentication: you sign in with a one-time link sent to your email address, or a one-time verification code sent by text message to your phone. We do not store passwords. Signing in sets a session cookie ("dd_session") that keeps you signed in on your device for up to 30 days. You are responsible for keeping access to your email account or phone number secure, and for all activity that takes place under your account. You must be at least 18 years old to create an account. Each account is generally limited to owning one profile at a time; if you believe you should have access to more than one (for example, a firm and its founder), contact us.

6. Location Information

We treat location information carefully. For an individual's profile, we do not publish a home or private street address; by default, an individual's location is shown at the neighborhood level only (for example, "SoHo" rather than a street address). Once you claim your profile, you control this yourself through a location-visibility setting that lets you show an exact location, a neighborhood only, or no location at all. Company profiles may display a business address when one is publicly available, subject to the same visibility control; a company without its own New York premises may instead show a short location note (for example, "Available through [Gallery Name] · Based in [City]") rather than a fabricated New York address.

7. Content You Submit

When you apply for a profile, request ownership of one, or edit a claimed profile, you may submit information such as your (or your company's) name, biography or practice statement, professional title, pronouns, specialties, business email and phone, website and social links, neighborhood or address, project history, awards and press, education, firm affiliations, and portrait, logo, or work images (up to 15 work images per profile, plus one portrait or logo). By submitting this content, you represent that it is accurate and that you have the right to submit it, and you grant SENTIENT a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, display, reproduce, and distribute it on design.nyc for as long as your profile remains published. This licence does not transfer ownership of your content, and you may edit or remove most of it yourself at any time from your account. You are solely responsible for any content you submit, including ensuring you hold the rights to any images you upload, and you agree to indemnify SENTIENT against claims arising from a breach of that warranty. A business email or phone you choose to publish on your profile is never confused with your private account email or phone, which are used only for sign-in and account notices and are never copied onto your public profile.

8. Images Sourced From Public Portfolios

Separately from content you submit yourself, many work images on compiled (unclaimed) profiles are drawn directly from the subject's own publicly available website or portfolio, displayed for the editorial purpose of illustrating that person's or firm's work within the directory, with the profile page itself serving as attribution back to its source. We do not claim ownership of this imagery, and copyright in it remains with its original owner — typically the designer, firm, or photographer whose site it came from. If you are the rights holder of an image on the Site and want it removed, replaced, or credited differently, contact us at the email in Section 19 with a description of the image and where it appears, and we will address your request promptly, including removing the image while we investigate if warranted. Claiming your profile is the fastest way to replace compiled imagery with your own.

9. Events Calendar

The Site's events calendar (/events) lists third-party New York design-community events — fairs, festivals, exhibitions, openings, talks, tours, workshops, and markets — compiled from organizers' public announcements and websites. We do not organize, host, sponsor, or verify these events, and we are not responsible for their accuracy, availability, safety, or outcome. Dates, times, locations, prices, and other details can change after we publish them, and events can be postponed or cancelled by their organizers with little or no notice to us; while we try to reflect status changes promptly, always confirm details with the organizer before making plans. Each event's detail page links out to the organizer's own site for tickets, registration, or further information — we do not process registrations, ticket sales, or payments for any listed event, and any transaction you complete on an organizer's site is between you and that organizer, governed by their own terms.

10. Google Maps

The Site embeds Google Maps to show studio, office, and event locations. Your use of the embedded map is subject to Google's own Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and Google may collect information about your interaction with the map independently of design.nyc.

11. Intellectual Property

Apart from the profile content described in Sections 3, 7, and 8, the Site itself — its design, layout, software, editorial curation, and text — is the property of SENTIENT Furniture Inc. and is protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may not reproduce, scrape, crawl, systematically extract, or create derivative works from the Site without our prior written consent, except for ordinary personal, non-commercial browsing.

12. Prohibited Conduct

You agree not to: submit false, misleading, or fraudulent information; claim ownership of a profile representing another person or company without authorization to do so; upload images or content you do not have the right to use; harass, defame, or infringe the rights of others through the Site; attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the Site or its underlying systems; scrape, crawl, or systematically extract data from the Site without our prior written consent; or use the Site for any unlawful purpose.

13. Disclaimers

The Site is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty that it will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free. Profile information — whether compiled by us or submitted by a claimant — reflects a mix of third-party sources and self-reported facts, and we do not guarantee its accuracy or completeness. Event listings are third-party information subject to change, as described in Section 9.

14. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, SENTIENT Furniture Inc. and its officers, directors, employees, and agents will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or related to your use of the Site — including reliance on any profile or event information — even if advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability to you for any claim arising from your use of the Site will not exceed one hundred US dollars ($100).

15. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless SENTIENT Furniture Inc. and its affiliates from any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses — including reasonable legal fees — arising out of or related to your use of the Site, content you submit, or your breach of these Terms.

16. Suspension and Termination

We may suspend, hide, or remove a profile, or restrict or terminate your account, at any time for any reason, including a violation of these Terms, a well-founded correction request from the profile's actual subject, or a determination that a profile no longer belongs on the Site. You may request removal of a profile you own, or deletion of your account, at any time by contacting us.

17. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising from these Terms is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in New York County, New York.

18. Changes to These Terms

We may revise these Terms from time to time. We will post the updated Terms on this page with a new effective date. Your continued use of the Site after a revision takes effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms.
