Powerhouse Arts

Fabrication WorkshopEst. 2012

Nonprofit creative-production center in a landmarked 1903 former power station in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Powerhouse Arts provides fabrication shops for ceramics, print, and public-art projects, membership studios, an artist-in-residence program, and the Alpha Workshops decorative-arts training program, serving NYC-based artists and fabricators. The 170,000-square-foot building, decommissioned in the 1950s and later known informally as "the Batcave" for the graffiti artists and underground parties it hosted, was redeveloped from 2016 to 2022 by architects Herzog & de Meuron with PBDW Architects before opening to the public in 2023.
