Wendy Maruyama

San Diego-based furniture maker, sculptor, and educator whose four-decade studio-furniture practice merges woodworking with postmodern and feminist perspectives. She earned a master's degree in furniture design from Rochester Institute of Technology, one of the program's first two women graduates, and served over thirty years as Professor Emerita of woodworking and furniture design at San Diego State University. Her practice has expanded into sculpture and socially engaged work, including The Tag Project, on the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans. She received the American Craft Council's Gold Medal for Consummate Craftsmanship in 2024, the year she exhibited with Tom Loeser in "Colorama" at Superhouse and had her first solo museum survey at the Fresno Art Museum. Work held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, LACMA, and MFA Boston; represented in New York by Superhouse.
