BOLD (Brian Orter Lighting Design)

Lighting Design Studio

Architectural lighting design firm headquartered in Chelsea, Manhattan, with additional studios in California and Indonesia. Founded by Brian Orter, whose background in theatrical lighting shaped early nightclub work in New York, BOLD designs lighting for hospitality, commercial, residential, and mixed-use projects; Gary Wong serves as creative director. Orter trained in theatrical lighting at Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn and Purchase College before designing lighting for nightclubs including Club USA, the Tunnel, and Limelight, work that brought in early commercial clients including David Rockwell, AvroKO, and SHoP Architects. Originally operating under Orter's own name, the firm was renamed BOLD to credit staff as it grew. Recent projects include lighting for 111 Varick, Accenture's One Manhattan West office, and the Nike S23NYC studio.
