Maharam

Textile and leather design house headquartered in the Flatiron District, producing performance fabrics for commercial and residential interiors. Founded in 1902 by Louis Maharam, who began selling fabric remnants from a pushcart, the company passed to his grandson Don in the late 1950s and then to Don's sons, Michael and Stephen Maharam, in 1996, who refocused the business on design excellence. Michael Maharam developed relationships with textile designers including Alexander Girard and the Eames family and gained access to their archives; later collaborators have included Hella Jongerius, whose 2005 Polder Sofa for Vitra was upholstered in a Maharam textile. Herman Miller later acquired the firm, now a MillerKnoll subsidiary that maintains its New York design studio and multibrand showroom alongside Knoll Textiles and Edelman.
