Michiru Tanaka Lighting Design

Michiru Tanaka Lighting Design is a Brooklyn (DUMBO) architectural and environmental lighting studio founded by Michiru Tanaka, IALD, in 2013. Tanaka relocated from Tokyo to New York in 2007 and has led lighting design for hospitality, retail, and residential projects worldwide, including Rosewood Phuket, FENDI Montenapoleone, and the Grand Central Terminal Holiday Light Show. She studied interior design at Musashino Art University in Tokyo and worked as a lighting designer at ICE in Tokyo before roles at firms including L'Observatoire International in New York. Her studio's work includes a Smithsonian Institution lighting upgrade for the Freer and Sackler galleries and the Kumiko OLED fixture developed with Kaneka Corporation, with a design approach drawing on Japanese lighting philosophy and an emphasis on energy-efficient, sustainable solutions.
