Niche Handmade Furniture is a Manhattan-based studio founded in 2024 by Eskinder Assfa, who previously ran Nor Handmade Furniture in Ethiopia before relocating to New York. The studio makes small-batch ottomans, accent chairs, and cushion covers using African textiles, including Malian mud cloth, Congolese Kuba cloth, and Ethiopian hand-woven fabric, over organic cotton. Assfa launched Nor Handmade Furniture in Addis Ababa in 2019 before founding its New York successor, which is a verified member of the Made in NYC and New York Handmade Collective business networks and sells to interior stylists and boutique retailers in addition to individual home buyers.
