Textiles & Surfaces StudioEst. 2015Brooklyn rug design studio founded in 2015 by Arati Rao in creative partnership with artist Adam Sipe. Designs geometric flatweave and shuttle-woven rugs, pillows, and throws that are hand-loomed in Rajasthan, India by multi-generation weaving families using traditional panja looms, hand-dyed yarn, and natural fibers including cotton, hemp, wool, and silk. Rao first connected with a family of seventh-generation weavers in 2010, and the studio now works with master artisans from roughly 26 families across Rajasthan using a centuries-old flatweave technique originally developed for nomadic tent flooring. Some collections are water-absorbent and machine-washable, suited to kitchen and bath use. The studio's work has been covered by Interior Design magazine.
