Haptic Lab

Haptic Lab is a Brooklyn Navy Yard textile studio founded in 2009 by architect Emily Fischer, making quilted map art, constellation and landscape quilts, sailing-ship kites, and other sewn objects designed around the sense of touch. A certified B Corp since 2019, the studio partners with artisan makers and offers custom embroidery, DIY kits, and wholesale programs for hospitality clients. Fischer, who earned a master's in architecture from the University of Michigan's Taubman College in 2005, started the studio after being laid off from an architecture firm during the recession and gaining attention for winning a kite-design competition. Its quilts are hand-stitched by artisan quilters in India using a dense running-stitch technique Fischer calls "Amish rules quilting," and her work has appeared in Dwell and Architectural Digest.
