Skilset

Brooklyn Navy Yard furniture and fabrication studio founded by Andy Tyson in 2009 after he graduated from Parsons' Product Design program. Operates as both a working studio and a teaching/maker space, building custom furniture and objects almost entirely from salvaged and reclaimed materials sourced around the Navy Yard and the surrounding neighborhood. The veteran-owned studio operates out of Building 5 at the Navy Yard. Before committing to Skilset full time during the COVID-19 pandemic, Tyson worked at production companies including Milk Studios and Bureau Betak. He designs furniture meant to be sturdy enough for everyday use yet light enough to carry up a walk-up apartment building, drawing inspiration from tradespeople and workers rather than the design industry.
